Fort Sumner is a small, unincorporated community in De Baca County, New Mexico, with a rich and diverse history. The area was originally inhabited by the Apache and Navajo tribes, who were eventually forced off their land as a result of the Long Walk, a series of forced marches and relocations by the US government. This paved the way for the establishment of Fort Sumner in 1862, during the Civil War, as a military fort to protect settlers and travelers in the region.

The most famous event in Fort Sumner’s history occurred in 1881 when Sheriff Pat Garrett shot and killed the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid in a small room at the Maxwell House, which was owned by Pete Maxwell. Today, the site where Billy the Kid was killed is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the country.

Fort Sumner is also known for being the location of the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation, where thousands of Navajos and Mescalero Apaches were forcibly relocated by the US government in the 1860s. The reservation was intended to “civilize” and assimilate the Native Americans, but conditions were harsh and many died from disease and starvation. The reservation was eventually abandoned, and the survivors were allowed to return to their traditional lands.

Today, Fort Sumner is a quiet and picturesque town with a population of around 1,000 people. The economy is primarily based on agriculture and tourism, with locals taking pride in the town’s rich history and heritage. The Billy the Kid Museum is a popular attraction, showcasing artifacts and memorabilia from the Wild West era, including the gun that killed the outlaw. The town also hosts an annual Old Fort Days celebration, featuring rodeos, parades, and other traditional Western events.

In addition to its historical significance, Fort Sumner is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as hiking, fishing, and birdwatching. The nearby Sumner Lake State Park offers a wide range of recreational opportunities, including boating, camping, and picnicking, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
